Mars Society Oregon Mars Society - Oregon Chapter
Meeting Minutes
September 27, 2003 Eugene, OR

In Attendence:
  • Erik Carlstrom
  • Gus Frederick
  • Michael Haisten
  • Jim Pierce
  • Joe Turner
Agenda Item: Dues collection
Presenter: Joe
Discussion: We discussed whether or not dues should be mandatory to be a member of the Oregon Chapter. It was decided and generally agreed upon that all Mars Society members from Oregon should be considered members of the Oregon Chapter, and that voting priviledges could be extended to those who submit dues. Currently we collect $10 per year and use the money to pay for meeting spaces, mailings, fundraisers, etc. Dues were collected from the 5 members present, Harold Miller, and previously from Bob McGown, Dareth Murray, Cheryl York and Bryce Walden.

Agenda Item: Community Outreach
Presenter: Erik
Discussion: Suggestions were made by all for community outreach projects. Erik suggested (his girlfriend gets the credit) contacting local 4H/FFA clubs or scout groups for organizing events. Jim followed this up by suggesting we get involved in school science fairs. Gus has contacted OMSI to try to set up a Planetfest style event which we could get involved in. Michael has volunteered to be our Media Director and will collect media for developing a presentation to take advantage of the upcoming Mars missions and the public interest they will generate. Joe suggested looking into using Meetup.com both as a way to setup our meetings, and to hopefully lure in new members who might not otherwise find us.

Agenda Item: Event Calendar
Presenter: All
Discussion: The community outreach topic led us to discuss the calendar of events coming up. Gus will be in Bend Friday, Oct. 10th for the Oregon Science Teachers Fair and will man a Mars Society table there. Anyone interested in stopping by or helping out should contact him. In November we will have a presense, and probably a meeting, at the OryCon in Portland, taking place Nov. 14-16 at the DoubleTree Columbia River Hotel. Between December 25th and Mid-January will likely be the peak period of interest in Mars from the general public, with Mars Express/Beagle lander, and Spirit and Opportunity arriving.

Agenda Item: Election of Officers
Presenter: Gus
Discussion: It has been a number of years since we held elections officers in MSOR. With that in mind, we decided to shake things up a bit. Gus has been elected our new President, Erik will be the Vice President, and Joe will take on the role of Secretary and retain his responsibility as Treasurer.

Agenda Item: 'Why Go To Mars'
Presenter: All
Discussion: We thought it would be a good idea for us each to participate in the announced 'Why Go To Mars' contest that HQ is having. Gus would like to have all entries for our state also send copies to him, ASAP, for inclusion in the chapter newsletter which he plans to send to each current and past paid Mars Society member in Oregon.

Special Notes: Treasurer Report
Following today's collections we currently have $182.00 in Oregon Chapter funds. There have been no expenses since the last report.

Meeting Adjourned.
