About the Mars Society Puget Sound Welcome! We are the Seattle / Puget Sound area chapter of the international Mars Society, also known as the Mars Society Puget Sound! About the Mars Society The Mars Society was founded in August 1998 and is an international organization dedicated to furthering the goal of the exploration and settlement of the Red Planet. This will be done by:
The Mars Society is a non-profit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States. Our federal tax identification number is 31-1585646. Donations to the Mars Society are tax deductible. Our chapter has separate finances and is in the process of incorporating as a 501(c)(3) organization in the state of Washington. Monthly Chapter Meeting Our chapter meetings, held on the third Saturday of every month, are always open to the public and new members welcome.
Next Few Meetings in 2008:
We will be discussing our current projects and upcoming local events we'd like to participate in. New members are always welcome, we especially need students from UW and interested space enthusiasts all over the Puget sound region!
Typical Agenda
"Executive Committee" Meetings A few of us also meet weekly at our favorite watering hole. We talk about chapter business, but also about space exploration and other subjects. Everybody is welcome to join us, but bring a thirst for cheap ale!
Tuesday nights at 7 PM (some get there at 6:30) Upcoming Events
Public Outreach Events
Past Years Events In January 2000, Dustin Green spoke at the RustyCon "R2K" convention about Mars Direct to an audience of 5-6 people, in an early morning talk. Jim Burk's scheduled talk on Robotic Mars Exploration was accidentally left off the schedule by convention organizers. On December 3rd, 1999, Our chapter held Seattle MarsFest '99 at the Boeing Museum of Flight, and helped other chapters publicize their events by maintaining the MarsFest.org website. These events coincided with the (failed) landing of the Mars Polar Lander and Deep Space 2 Microprobes.

Seattle MarsFest '99 On Friday, December 3rd Seattle MarsFest '99 was held at the Boeing Museum of Flight. It went very well and over 300 people showed up (we're still awaiting the official attendance from the Museum) But of course, the Mars Polar Lander -- our "guest of honor" -- failed to contact us here on Earth. Saturday in the Seattle Times there was a short article about the event on page A15 titled "Earthlings party fades when Mars fails to show". It was written by Eric Sorensen. Thanks go out to The Planetary Society, NSS Seattle, the Museum of Flight, UW Professor Jim Tillman, and everybody else who helped us with this event.
