About the Mars Society Puget Sound

Welcome! We are the Seattle / Puget Sound area chapter of the international Mars Society, also known as the Mars Society Puget Sound!

About the Mars Society

The Mars Society was founded in August 1998 and is an international organization dedicated to furthering the goal of the exploration and settlement of the Red Planet.

This will be done by:

  • Broad public outreach to instill the vision of pioneering Mars.
  • Support of ever more aggressive government-funded Mars exploration programs around the world.
  • Conducting Mars exploration on a private basis.

The Mars Society is a non-profit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States. Our federal tax identification number is 31-1585646. Donations to the Mars Society are tax deductible. Our chapter has separate finances and is in the process of incorporating as a 501(c)(3) organization in the state of Washington.

    Past Years Events

In January 2000, Dustin Green spoke at the RustyCon "R2K" convention about Mars Direct to an audience of 5-6 people, in an early morning talk. Jim Burk's scheduled talk on Robotic Mars Exploration was accidentally left off the schedule by convention organizers.

On December 3rd, 1999, Our chapter held Seattle MarsFest '99 at the Boeing Museum of Flight, and helped other chapters publicize their events by maintaining the MarsFest.org website. These events coincided with the (failed) landing of the Mars Polar Lander and Deep Space 2 Microprobes.

    Political Action
We are currently doing a letter writing campaign to Save NASA's budget from the billion dollar cuts. There is no current Political Action coordinator & committee chairman. See our Political Action page for more information.

    MarsNews.com
MarsNews.com was recently relaunched! The new site is streamlined and also added a few new features. Two of our freinds and members run the site -- Jim Burk designed the site and is Editor-in-Chief and Dustin Green serves as Assistant Editor. MarsNews.com has won numerous awards including being named as one of the 50 best Science & Technology websites by Popular Science Magazine.

    Education/Outreach
A chapter committee has been formed to oversee our Student Essay Contest, membership drives, brochures, and general outreach. Dustin Green is our Education/Outreach coordinator. See our Education/Outreach page for more information.

    Displays
This committee will oversee building of displays and models. Current projects are to come up with an easily transportable convention display as well as some Mars Direct models -- both of which we may soon offer to sell to other chapters. Chris Vancil is our display committee chairman.

    Technical
A chapter commitee headed by Randy Rumley has been formed to oversee future technical projects.

    Seattle MarsFest '99

On Friday, December 3rd Seattle MarsFest '99 was held at the Boeing Museum of Flight. It went very well and over 300 people showed up (we're still awaiting the official attendance from the Museum) But of course, the Mars Polar Lander -- our "guest of honor" -- failed to contact us here on Earth.

Saturday in the Seattle Times there was a short article about the event on page A15 titled "Earthlings party fades when Mars fails to show". It was written by Eric Sorensen.

Thanks go out to The Planetary Society, NSS Seattle, the Museum of Flight, UW Professor Jim Tillman, and everybody else who helped us with this event.
