Friday - Sunday August 1-3, 2008
 | The inaugural Julian
Starfest, brought to you by the three local astronomers in association with the Julian
Merchants Association and the Julian Chamber of Commerce, will be held at
Menghini Winery. Julian has some of the darkest,
steadiest skies in Southern California, and at 4,300' in elevation, offers superb astronomical
viewing. This, to-be-yearly event, will be your opportunity to enjoy some outstanding astronomy
while also enjoying the astronomy vendor exhibition area, swap meet, guest lecturers, tour of
Palomar Observatory and camaraderie
that comes with associating with fellow astronomers. Proceeds from the event will be used to
build an observatory for the Julian Union High School District.
TMS-SD members will be there as speakers, and for public

| ABOUT | The
SAN DIEGO MARS ROVER is an approximate 1/4-scale operational
model of the NASA/JPL's Mars
Exploration Rovers (MER) "Spirit" and "Opportunity" -- which are still
operational on Mars today, over four Earth years after landing on the Red Planet in January
2004!
Yes, the SAN DIEGO MARS ROVER is operatable by the general
public, especially children (10-years old or older recommended)! It is a radio-controlled
vehicle, and features a wireless video camera onboard. It is navigated by watching the
video signal it sends back to Earth and Mission Control! Just like at NASA/JPL, but without
that pesky 3.1-to-22.5-minute "speed of light" delay!
We also have a second Mars Rover, an in-scale radio-controlled replica of the very first Mars
Rover, the 1997 MARS SOJOURNER ROVER. This Mars Rover will drive forward and backward and
can climb over rocks and other objects placed in its path.
TMS-SD also offers several multimedia presentations on Mars
Exploration to round out your Mars Rover events. Just ask!
|
| AVAILABILITY | The
SAN DIEGO MARS ROVERS is available for display and operation
at public events and gatherings, especially to those with a space, science or educational theme.
Please don't hesitate to ask -- we LOVE to show her off and talk about the exploration of
Mars!
|
| ALL VOLUNTEERS! |
THE MARS SOCIETY - SAN DIEGO is an entirely
all-volunteer organization. Our SAN DIEGO MARS ROVER was
scratch-built by volunteers using their own time and money. The SOJOURNER ROVER was a
commercially-available toy vehicle.
Because we're all volunteers and do not get paid for our Mars work (it is our passion), we will
make every effort to accommodate your scheduled events within the constraints of our "day jobs"
and other commitments.
|
WHAT DOES IT COST? |
The SAN DIEGO MARS ROVERS is available to appear at
schools and educational groups for a mere $25.00. Our Mars
Rovers will come to your event with a skilled and educated operator/lecturer and short video and
multimedia presentation on the planet Mars and
NASA/JPL's Mars Exploration Rovers
(MER). This money is used to pay for the lecturer's travel gasoline and to keep our
Mars Rovers repaired and in batteries. Naturally, donations are greatfully accepted!
