TMS-SD met at Gerry's studio (Studio 106) on July 8th. Gerry Williams, Jonathan
Butler, Tim Sommer, Debbie Sommer, Shannon Rupert-Robles, Dave Rankin and John Stone were
present. |
|
Tim & Debi shared their recent vacation where they drove across country and visited
both the EuroMARS hab at the Alden Planetarium in Chicago as well as the Utah MARS Desert
Research Station hab. Tim was very disappointed in the EuroMARS hab display, as it was a
just shell sitting nears the grass outside the planetarium with minimal
educational/instructional displays inside. Only the bottom (entrance) floor was accessible,
and the fellow on duty at the time didn't seem particularly well informed as to the hab's
purpose, and The Mars Society in general. They did, however, enjoy visiting the MDRS (even
though it was mothballed) and its Mars-like environs. |
|
Our monthly "Stars in the Park" public outreach went well this month, with us talking
to over 40 people. Unfortunately for those who went to see stars and planets through
telescopes, San Diego again rolled on the clouds at sunset and nary a star was to be seen. |
|
Shannon and Jonathan are planning on attending the 5th International MARS SOCIETY
CONVENTION at the University of Colorado at Boulder. They are also giving a paper there
based on a biology experiment they put together for Shannon to do while she was aboard the
MDRS in Crew #4. They plan on stopping off at MDRS (which is currently inactive) on the way
back to San Diego. |
|
The upcoming Comic-Con was next on the agenda. We are urgently seeking guest
speakers, with only John Carter McKnight ("The Spacefaring Web") onboard for sure at this
time. Shannon gave everyone the task of going home and soliciting five requests for speakers
for our Sunday August 4th panel, "MARS: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE". |
|
Our August 2nd Comic-Con panel, "MARS ANALOG RESEARCH STATIONS (MARS)" is shaping up
well, with our local chapter members being the panelists. Gerry and Shannon will be
discussing their time spent at the Utah hab, and the rest of our chapter will talk about the
MDRS Mission Support we performed for a month earlier this year. |
|
We've decided to ask Comic-Con for a Fan Table. This would provide us for a central
location to organize our activities as well as meet and talk with the public. It would allow
us to display photographs of the Mars Analog Research Stations, and flaunt our chapter's
goals and activities. |
|
We discussed building a banner (3'x6') for our chapter for Comic-Con and other
outreach activities, but the price seemed prohibitively expensive. Gerry will check more
into this. |
|
We also discussed custom printing our own Mars Society San Diego T-shirts. Gerry had
some prices on this, but will obtain more quotes. |
|
The group updated the layout of our informational flyer in preparation for printing
some for the Comic-Con. They're basically a redesign of our current flyer with updated
information. |
|
We decided that we would be a presence at the ConJecture, A Science Fiction & Fantasy
Convention on October 18th-20th, 2002 at the DoubleTree Mission Valley hotel in San Diego,
CA. We'll do our Comic-Con MDRS panel, and possibly have a (mostly unmanned) fan table. |
|
The meeting broke up with Shannon reiterating for everyone to go out and contact five
potential panelists. |
