Apogee Super Dwarf Wheat from the Utah State University Crop Physiology Lab. Eleven seeds were soaked overnight in water. The seeds then spent two additional days in a sprout chamber, with fresh water rinsed through daily. All but two of the seeds sprouted. At the end of day three, the sprouted seeds were transfered to the hanging planter (below), filled with Santiam Soil Sim. These show the growth of the wheat on the morning of day six. The existing flouresent tube lamp was swapped out with a GE wide-spectrum grow light. This setup gives new meaning to the term "Cube Farm." Of the nine seeds that sprouted, all eventually poked out of the soil sim. After the first week, an additional five sprouts were added. Nutrient solution is dumped into the planter three times daily and allowed to drain out the bottom, and recycled. The solution will be changed each week. Additionally, pieces of reflective mylar are draped around the planter to reflect even more of the light onto the plants. |
