Primary
Primary treatment occurs in a buried, standard cone-bottomed
septic tank. Large objects are screened, liquid is pumped to the greenhouse,
and solids are pumped into the composter.
Secondary (Fluid)
Liquid from the septic tank is pumped to a sequence of
anaerobic and aerobic tank bioreactors, then to a fibrous mat flow system,
where nutrients mobilized by attached microbes are fixed by higher plants. The
resulting biomass is used for composting and other processes.
Tertiary (Fluid)
Transpired/evaporated water is condensed and returned to
clean water storage. Possibly already potable, it is nevertheless filtered
through a standard reverse osmosis unit and sterilized with ozone or UV on
demand.
Secondary (Solid)
Solids are pumped from the septic tank to the composter,
where kitchen waste and other plant biomass is also recycled.
Tertiary (Solid)
The recalcitrant solids from the composter are disposed of
or used to generate plant growth media.
