Expedition Alpha -- MDRS Crew 30, a Mars Society Canada operation, arrived in the Utah desert Mars Desert Research Station for two weeks of Mars simulation -- the first Crew of MDRS Season 4.

November 22, 2004 San Diego Mission Valley Library hosted a lecture: "MARS 2004 EXPLORATION UPDATE": A year in review from the Red Planet exploration robots, plus what's in store for 2005 and beyond.

September 20, 2004San Diego Mission Valley Library hosted a lecture, "Mars Analog Research Stations / Meet a Mars Commander" and discussed the adventures of Shannon Rupert Robles, who has crewed on three of the four Mars Simulations.

July 29, 2004The San Diego Aerospace Museum presented "Roving the Big Red Planet: Results from the NASA Mars Exploration Rover Missions" by Dr. Jim Bell, Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University. TMS-SD and the San Diego Mars Rover were there.

Comic-Con International: San Diego provided TMS-SD a display table in the main Exhibit Hall, as well as two programs: What's Up on Mars? with special guest Greg Bear ("Moving Mars"), Dr. Michael Caplinger (MSSS's Mars Global Surveyor/Mars Orbital Camera project), and Jason Willis (JPL Mars Rover Flight Director); and Mars Analog Research Stations-2004. We also premiered our new TMS-SD Mars Spacesuit, designed by Tim Sommer.

The Mars Society's MDRS - Mars Desert Research Station hosted an off-season Work Party team from TMS-SD, who assisted in cleaning and maintaining the Habitat and facilities.

JPL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, opened its doors to the public during its annual JPL OPEN HOUSE.

TMS-SD sponsored "MEET A MARS CREW COMMANDER" at the Weekend Talks lecture at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Shannon Rupert-Robles has been to the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah three times as a crew member (twice as the Crew Commander) where she conducted scientific research in simulated Mars-like conditions to learn the techniques necessary to explore he red planet. She also worked with a NASA team project discovering how astronauts, robots and computers can work together with scientists here on Earth to explore most efficiently. TMS-SD members were there, along with the San Diego Mars Rover.

May 14, 2004TMS-SD participated in a "Mars Outpost Event" at the Hillsdale Middle School in El Cajon, CA, along with the San Diego Mars Rover. Students built Mars rovers and an entire full-sized inflated Martian City and studied the science and engineering aspects of living on Mars.

In January, Long John Silver's offered to give America free Giant Shrimp if NASA found conclusive evidence of an ocean on Mars. TMS-SD members were at the Long John Silver's restaurant in El Cajon, CA for public outreach activities from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, along with the San Diego Mars Rover.

May 8, 2004"Six Minutes of Mars Landing" was discussed by JPL chief engineer Wayne Lee during the Taiwanese American Heritage Week celebrations.

Arnold Lectureship series, featuring "Exploring Mars With Spaceships And Paintbrush (What We've Learned About The Red Planet And Why)", with artist, author and scientist William K. Hartmann on the UCSD campus. TMS-SD was there with the San Diego Mars Rover.

April 2, 2004The Rancho Santa Fe Elementary School held their Science Discovery Day for its students (Grades K-8), where the entire day is devoted to hands-on science exhibits and interesting science speakers from 10:00am to 2:00pm. TMS-SD members was there along with the San Diego Mars Rover.

March 28, 2004TMS-SD ran the San Diego Mars Rover at the San Diego Aerospace Museum from Noon to 4:00pm in conjunction with "Engineering Day: Women in Engineering - Building a Future".

March 27, 2004DART - San Diego's Model Rocketry Club held a Model and High-Powered Rocket launch at Fiesta Island in Mission Bay. TMS-SD members were there for public outreach activities from 9:00am to Noon, along with the San Diego Mars Rover.

March 23, 2004The Mars Society - San Diego was featured in a news segment in conjunction with NASA's announcement of the Rover Opportunity confirming the past existence of water on Mars on XETV Fox Channel 6 at 10:00pm. (NOTE: requires QuickTime Player, and is 1.6-MB in size).

TMS-SD sponsored "WHAT'S UP ON MARS?", one of the Weekend Talks lecttres at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center: Dr. Michael Caplinger from Malin Space Science Systems was featured in a special presentation of the best images from the surface and from orbit, and fascinating analysis of what they mean. All of the recent missions - American, European and Japanese - were covered, with the highlights of each featured.

January 24, 2004Four members of TMS-SD were invited to view the Mars Exploration Rover "Opportunity" landing at Malin Space Science Systems, operators of the Mars Global Surveyor-Mars Orbital Camera, which was being used as a communications relay from the Martian surface. XETV Fox Channel 6 covered the landing on their 11:00pm news.

January 24, 2004The NASA/JPL Mars Exploration Rover named "Opportunity" landed successfuly at Meridiani near the Martian equator (on the opposite side of Mars than the "Spirit" rover, a site that shows a powerful a chemical signature of past liquid water in the form of the mineral hematite.

Every two weeks, a crew of 6 enters the simulation to learn how to live and work on the Red Planet. TMS-SD member Shannon Rupert-Robles took on the duties of Crew 21 Commander. TMS-SD operated as MDRS Mission Support for this Crew.

The Mars Society's Mars Analog Research Station project, the MDRS - Mars Desert Research Station began its Third Season with Crew 20 -- every two weeks, a crew of 6 enters the simulation to learn how to live and work on the Red Planet. TMS-SD wrapped up MDRS Mission Support duties for Crew 20, and began them for Crew 21.
