Greenhab History
This project, an effort to revitalize the Life Support
efforts of the Technical Task Force, resulted from discussions held between
Gary Fisher and Bruce Mackenzie from the Mars Society, and various Board
members of the Space Studies Institute (SSI). SSI has an ongoing CELSS research
project, and The Mars Society's Technical Task Force had explored options for
creating a wastewater recycling system for the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station.
We suggested combining forces to design a system for the easier to operate
MDRS, utilizing Mars Society and SSI experts for design, and Mars Society
volunteers both for fund-raising and construction.
The SSI researchers felt this was too much of a distraction
from their research at this time, and deferred any involvement for at least a
year.
Since support for this as a joint project had been received
from the Mars Society President and Board, and because so much effort had been
previously put into it by the Technical Task Force, it seemed that an effort
must be made to continue this as a Mars Society only project or risk going
another year without such a facility attached to an analog habitat, and the
dissolution of the expert team.
