December 30, 2005TMS-SD MARS MOVIE NIGHT SPECIAL -- "STAR TREK GOES TO MARS" - Part 2 (2005) -- two episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise - "Demons" and "Terra Prime", which we were unable to show in November due to technical difficulties.

December 16, 2005TMS-SD MARS MOVIE NIGHT -- "PROJECT SHADOWCHASER 3000" (1995).

December 15, 2005TMS-SD took our San Diego Mars Rover for more classroom visits at Miller Elementary School in San Diego.

December 7, 2005The San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA) hosted their "STARS IN THE PARK" public telescope viewing event outside the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. TMS-SD members were there for public outreach activities.

December 6, 2005 Rosa Parks Elementary School hosted a student kick-off event as they officially become a NASA Explorer School, a partnership with NASA to introduce students to careers in science. TMS-SD participated by taking our San Diego Mars Rover out for the kids to drive from 9am to 2pm.

November 13, 2005TMS-SD participated in "Reach for the Stars" at the Sally Ride Science Festival at University of California, Irvine campus.

November 12, 2005TMS-SD took our San Diego Mars Rover out to the "San Diego Aerospace Museum's Family Day" in Balboa Park.

November 7, 2005The planet Mars orbits the Sun once every 22 months. The Earth orbits the Sun once every 12 months. The Earth overtakes Mars once every 26 months. This is called "MARS OPPOSITION", when the Earth is directly between Mars and the Sun. Mars will be the brightest object in the eastern sky at sunset and will be very visible for the rest of the year.

October 29, 2005TMS-SD was interviewed by local Fox Channel 6 News at 10pm regarding the Mars Close Approach. (NOTE: requires QuickTime Player, and is 2.4-MB in size).

October 29, 2005MARS CLOSE APPROACH -- Earth and Mars are converged for a close encounter this year. Mars passed within 43,140,000 miles (69,420,000 km) of the Earth. Yes, that's really the South Polar ice cap you saw, and that bright spot in the middle of the planet is a dust storm!.

August 13, 2005Project ASTRO - San Diego held their Summer Workshop at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park for Educators and Astronomer/Space Science Volunteers. TMS-SD participated again this year.

August 11-14, 2005TMS-SD members participated in the The 8th International Mars Society Conference at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Shannon Rupert-Robles, Gerry Williams, Dave Rankin and Jesse Clark participated in programing events, and Shannon brought home an award.

August 3, 2005Several TMS-SD members Dave Rankin, Tim Sommer and Gerry Williams participated in taping several Headline News segments for Adelphia in San Diego's north county markets. July 18, 2005TMS-SD members, along with the San Diego Mars Rover, provided a Mars Exploration lecture and outreach at the Valencia Park Center For Academics, Drama and Dance magnet school in Southeast San Diego at 9:00am.

July 13-17, 2005TMS-SD participated (for the fifth year in a row) at the Comic-Con International 2005 popular art convention by operating our Display Booth in the Mezzanine area all four days of the convention, and hosting a panel discussion: Mars: The Future Isn't What It Used To Be -- a multimedia and panel discussion of how the plans for sending humans to Mars have changed from the past to the present and on into the future.
Featuring Dr. Michael Caplinger from Malin Space Science Systems (senior scientist for the Mars Orbital Camera / Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft currently at Mars); Kage Baker, author of "The Empress of Mars"; Rick Sternbach, senior illustrator for "Star Treks TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Nemesis"; astronomer Rica Sirbaugh French; editor Jeff Berkwits of "Amazing Stories" magazine; and Gerry Williams, publisher of the THE MARS MOVIE GUIDE.com. The panel was moderated by Dave Rankin, co-founder of The Mars Society - San Diego.

July 18, 2005TMS-SD members, along with the San Diego Mars Rover, will be providing a Mars Exploration lecture and outreach at the Valencia Park Center For Academics, Drama and Dance magnet school in Southeast San Diego at 9:00am. This is the school of our youngest TMS-SD member and Mars Exploration Rover wrangler, Troy Ang.

May 1-14, 2005MDRS Crew 40, an all-female crew, assumes occupancy of the Hab at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah for two weeks in a full-simulation mission. This is the FINAL crew of MDRS Season 4. The Hab will repoen for Season 5 in November.

April 28, 2005TMS-SD gave a 45-minute multimedia talk at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park to a Quarterly Staff Meeting of the City of San Diego Transportation Engineering Design Team. The topic was "The Road to Mars".

April 17-30, 2005 MDRS Crew 39 assumed occupancy of the Hab at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah for two weeks in a full-simulation mission.

April 16, 2005"Roving The Red Planet" was the lecture for the Weekend Talk Series at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park by TMS-SD members.

April 16, 2005TMS-SD member Gerry Williams was interviewed, along with Sci-Fi authors Ben Bova and Arthur C. Clarke as part of The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack program, dealing with the soundtracks for Mars movies on KFJC 89.7 FM from the Foothills Community College campus in San Jose, California. Gerry is the webmaster of the THE MARS MOVIE GUIDE. This program was webcast.

April 9, 2005The San Diego Aerospace Museum hosted "Fly Into The Future: Cleared for Takeoff" by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. Museum admission was FREE all day with access to flight simulators, the Children's Museum Activity Center and the San Diego Mars Rover (along with the TMS-SD members crewing our Display Table, and our Mars Suit.

April 6, 2005The San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA) hosted their "STARS IN THE PARK" public telescope viewing event outside the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. TMS-SD members were there for public outreach activities.

April 3-16, 2005 MDRS Crew 38 assumed occupancy of the Hab at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah for two weeks in a full-simulation mission. TMS-SD member Shannon Rupert Robles provided the Earth-based Science Team Lead for this NASA/Ames-sponsored "Mobile Agents" project (in its 4th Season at the Utah Hab).

April 2, 2005EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS offered lots of answers and opportunities for girls from all over San Diego County at an all-day program at UCSD. Workshops from Archeology to Zoology enabled hands-on explorations in science, mathematics, and technology. Girls had the chance to talk with others who share their interests studying in science and technology as mentors for the whole day. TMS-SD members will lead three sessions on Mars Exploration with the San Diego Mars Rover.

March 25-27, 2005TMS-SD participated with a fan table and three programs for the ConDor XII Sci-Fi Convention at the Mission Valley Mariott.

March 20 - April 2, 2005 MDRS Crew 37 assumed occupancy of the Hab at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah for two weeks in a full-simulation mission.

March 19, 2005The Science and Education Partnership (STEP) invited The Mars Society to participate in their Teacher's Conference at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Corona, CA. TMS-SDtook our Interactive Diaplay Table and the San Diego Mars Rover to this event.

March 18, 2005TMS-SD MARS MOVIE NIGHT -- "DOCTOR WHO AND THE PYRAMIDS OF MARS" (1975).

March 12, 2005TMS-SD member Shannon Rupert Robles performed a one week stint as the Commander of MDRS Crew 36 to the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, the first all woman crew at any of the MARS project stations.
