December 30, 2006Fiesta Island's Over-the-Line field in Mission Bay hosted a Model Rocket Launch event by the Diego Area Rocket Team (D.A.R.T.) from 8:00am to noon.

There was no official TMS-SD participation, but TMS-SD members were both watching and launching rockets.

November 10, 2006The REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING of TMS-SD offered a multimedia public lecture, "TEN YEARS OVER MARS", with Dr. Michael Caplinger, Senior Scientist at Malin Space Science Systems.

- OCTOBER 2006 -
October 28, 2006The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center's "Weekend Program" featured "Mars From Above" with Dr. Ken Edgett, Staff Scientist at Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS), the local company that designed, built and operates cameras for all three U.S. spacecraft currently orbiting Mars. TMS-SD participated in this event with with our display table and the San Diego Mars Rover.

October 21, 2006The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park featured Family Science Days with Astronaut Sally Ride at the Fleet for the San Diego release of her book, "Mystery of Mars". TMS-SD participated in this event with with our display table and the San Diego Mars Rover.

October 20-21, 2006The X-Prize Cup took place in in Las Cruces, New Mexico. No TMS-SD participation in this event, however many members attended.

October 14, 2006The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center's "Weekend Program" featured a Mars Rover Update with one of the leading engineers behind NASA/JPL's Mars Exploration Rovers, Nagin Cox. TMS-SD participated in this event with with our display table and the San Diego Mars Rover.

October 13, 2006The REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING of TMS-SD was cancelled due to other commitments by all key members -- Sorry.

October 5, 2006The San Diego Science Alliance hosted the Third Annual Robo Expo at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, in conjunction with their current exhibitDinosaurs: Reel & Robotic. TMS-SD members were there with the San Diego Mars Rover.

October 4, 2006TMS-SD's San Diego Mars Rover was featured on KUSI-TV's "Good Morning San Diego" at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center for the premier of the IMAX Film, ROVING MARS. (NOTE: requires QuickTime Player, and is 14.6-MB in size).

October 3, 2006The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park hosted a members-only sneak-peek event for the IMAX Film, ROVING MARS. TMS-SD members were there for the activities from 5:30pm to 8:30pm with the San Diego Mars Rover.

The Fifth Conjecture, an annual San Diego area convention devoted to all things science-fiction and fantasy took over the Red Lion Hanalei Hotel in Mission Valley for the weekend. TMS-SD was there for public outreach activities with our display table, and participated in several programming events: "Mars Exploration Rovers - Year 2", "Mars on Earth - The Adventures of Space Pioneers in the Utah Desert" and "Humans to Mars - How We'll Get There".

The 64th World Science Fiction Convention -- WORLDCON/L.A.CON IV, the world's foremost science fiction convention was held in Anaheim, CA. TMS-SD set up our display table and gave four Mars-related programming events: "MARS ON EARTH -- ADVENTURES OF SPACE PIONEERS IN THE UTAH DESERT", "MARS EXPLORATION ROVERS -- YEAR 2", "HOW WE'LL GET THERE--HUMANS TO MARS" and "MARS IN THE MOVIES". We also ran our San Diego Mars Rover around the Exhibit Hall -- the kids (of all ages) loved it!

July 1 to July 4, 2006The West's premiere Science Fantasy Conference, Conzilla/Westercon 59 took over the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley for the Independence Weekend. TMS-SD was there for public outreach activities with our display table and several programming events, including "Mars Exploration Rovers Year 2" and "Humans to Mars" panels, the multimedia "Mars in the Movies", a special screening of "Destination: Mars!" and a 24-hour Mars Movie Marathon.


- JUNE 2006 -
June 28, 2006TMS-SD members took the San Diego Mars Rover to the Elementary Institute of Science for two classes and some hands-on experience with robotic Martian exploration.

June 20, 2006OASIS, a unique educational program for mature adults who want to continue to learn and be productive during the best years of their lives, offered the following class: MARS EXPLORATION ROVERS--YEAR 2 -- NASA's two Mars Exploration Rovers have been traveling the red planet for over two years now. Each Rover has inspected over four miles of red sand and rock, craters and dunes, looking for evidence of water. Mars Society member Gerry Williams gave a tour of Mars by way of the twin Rovers' points-of-view.

Fleet Science Center's Weekend Talk Series features Onward To Mars -- It has been 34 years since a person walked on the moon -- now it's time for us to walk on Mars! Join members of The Mars Society-San Diego for a multimedia look at current scenarios for human exploration of the Red Planet. Compare plans from NASA, Europe, Russia, Mars Society and others for opening up the final frontier to human exploration and colonization of Mars. At 1:00pm in the Lecture Hall.

TMS-SD members were also there with the San Diego Mars Rover and an interactive display table.

Fleet Science Center's Weekend Talk Series features Return to the Moon -- In this family-friendly presentation for ages 7 and up, astronomer Dr. Philip Blanco will guide us through some fun activities to show how big and how far the Moon really is (you may be surprised), how to observe the Moon from Earth, and what it would be like to go there. On the way, we shall relive the highlights of past missions, and look at some of the future plans in the works for lunar exploration and settlement. Part one of a two part series on the human exploration of our neighboring worlds.

May 12, 2006The MDRS 2005-2006 Field Season wraped up. The Mars Society begins readying for its 2006 Summer Season at the FMARS facility in the Canadian arctic in July 2006.

May 6, 2006The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station concluded its 5th Field Season in the Utah desert with a one-week mission by Crew 50 from Penn State University. You can find out what happened there by checking out the 2006 Field Season - Daily Reports & Photos.

May 6, 2006The TMS-SD celebrated Space Day in Balboa Park by setting up our interactive display table and running the San Diego Mars Rover at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park from 10:00am to 1:00pm; and then over to the San Diego Aerospace Museum from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

May 4th-7th, 2006The 25th annual International Space Development Conference (ISDC) featured dozens of presentations, panel discussions, interactive exhibits and activities spanning the entire spectrum of space-related issues: exploration, tourism, science, technology, policy, and commerce.

April 23, 2006The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station continued its fifth season in the Utah desert near Capitol Reef National Park with a two week adventure with Crew 49 by members of the NASA/Ames Mobile Agent's Project.

TMS-SD MARS MOVIE NIGHT -- "SPACE: ABOVE AND BEYOND" (1995-96).

April 15, 2006The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center's Weekend Talk Series featured Mars Recon! JPL/NASA Spies on the Red Planet -- The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter entered orbit around the red planet in March 2006 and JPL Solar System Ambassador Jay Lavine gave a JPL/NASA update. TMS-SD members were there with the San Diego Mars Rover.

April 13, 2006The REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING of TMS-SD was held at Grossmont College. The program featured two Moon-related events:

David Schrunk, a former aerospace engineer and founder of the Science of Laws Institute in San Diego, talked about how "A hundred years from now, expect to see a fully inhabited sister planet of Earth. People will be living on the moon permanently, a by-product of a multi-phase effort to create what is called the new "Planet Moon Project."

TMS-SD member Gerry Williams discussed the Moon Society's Artemis Moonbase Sim-1 lunar simulation at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station in the Utah desert. Gerry was the primary Mission Support CapCOM for this simulated lunar excursion.

April 12, 2006 Yuri's Night World Space Party celebrated the anniversary of the first human in space, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. TMS-SD celebrated this event locally at the Acapulco Restaurant in Old Town San Diego.

Fleet Science Center presented "Dome Day!" -- For one day only, special screenings galore of the newest films and the latest technology presented on the world's first IMAX Dome Screen, including three screenings of Disney's spectacular IMAX film, ROVING MARS. TMS-SD members were there with the San Diego Mars Rover

March 3-5, 2006TMS-SD participated in the ConDor XIII Sci-Fi Convention in Mission Valley. We had a display table, as well as several presentations during the convention:

"Mars Exploration Rovers, Year 2: They Keep On Going and Going and Going ...", with Gerry Williams, Dave Rankin and Jeff Berkwits;

Dave and Gerry are joined by Sci-Fi authors Todd McCaffrey, and Vernor Vinge, and science writer Jonathan Vos Post for a discussion panel on "Exploiting the Solar System".

February 26, 2006The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station continued its fifth season in the Utah desert with a two week adventure of Crew 45 by the Moon Society. TMS-SD provided the primary Mission Support CapCOM duty for this crew.

January 23, 2006The Learning Choice Academy hosted Science Day - NASA Assembly at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Mission Valley. TMS-SD participated with our Interactive Display Table and our San Diego Mars Rover from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.

January 1-14, 2006The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station began its fifth season in the Utah desert near Capitol Reef National Park with a two week adventure with Crew 41 and San Diego member Shannon Rupert -- who already holds the record of the most simulated Mars exploration time at 104 days.
